Dry-Fly Fishing (Fundamentals)

Key points

  • Leader: 9 ft tapered to 4X (~6 lb) + 2–3 ft of 4X/5X tippet; cast cross-current first for the easiest drift and hookset .
  • Presentation: drag-free dead drift — match the foam's speed; add a twitch or skate for Stimulators and Elk Hair Caddis .
  • Fly choice: size first, then profile/colour. Core box: Adams #12–16, Orange Stimulator #8–10, Elk Hair Caddis #10–14; also a greased Muddler Minnow skated for grasshoppers/caddis .
  • Target rises: work edges/tail of the run first, then upstream/centre; cast ~3 ft above the rise .
  • Hookset: wait a beat, lift to tighten, let the fish set itself .
