Brook Trout

Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)

Key points

  • Identity: Actually a char (Salvelinus fontinalis), characterized by light spots on a dark background and white edges on lower fins .
  • Range: Native to eastern North America — Hudson Bay basin, the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence system, and the Maritimes; introduced widely across western Canada, the western U.S., and other continents (source).
  • Stocking: A hatchery mainstay wherever cold water allows. In BC the FFSBC stocks it into countless stillwaters — Kootenay examples include Premier Lake and North Star Lake .
  • Tactics: Aggressive feeders. Leeches, Woolly Buggers, and small nymphs (Hare's Ear, Prince) stripped near weed beds or structures work best. In summer, they respond well to terrestrial dry-fly patterns.

Open questions

  • Spawning success and self-sustaining stream populations in Kootenay Pass creeks (e.g., Boundary Lake tributaries).
