Snapshot

Best current source: St. Mary Angler report dated 2026-06-27 ("The Season is in Full Swing as Conditions are Rounding Into Form!"):

  • St. Mary River — clearing daily, flow dropping steadily; clears faster than other East Kootenay rivers thanks to its headwater lake. Still pushing fast: guides are hunting slower back channels, bank edges, pockets behind rocks and structure.
  • Elk River — "still running a bit dirty and high."
  • Bull River & Skookumchuck — "clear, but running very high."
  • Catches (Jun 27 trip): 12–15 trout landed per angler — mostly westslope cutthroat and cut-bows, a few full rainbows. Cutts averaging 13–15", rainbows over 20". Fish took dries, nymphs and small streamers (no specific patterns named). Cutthroat are finishing spawning and dropping back to summer runs.
  • Outlook (theirs): "As we move into July all the systems will drop and clear up fast… full-go mode" soon; lingering Purcell/Rockies snow bodes well for summer flows.

Matches the gauge picture on Kootenay Region River Flows — 2026-07-02 — everything on a falling limb.

Source health

  • Kootenay Fly Shop river report is dead — newest post is from the 2023 season. Only 2026 signal is a Facebook embed (~early June): "river closures and runoff in full swing." Don't rely on this page for current conditions. — find their active channel (Facebook/Instagram) for reports.
  • Both forums are bot-walled (Tollbit paywall + fingerprinting on bcfishingreports.com and flyfishbc.com) — can't be auto-refreshed. Skim them manually in a browser during the trip; keep them in frontmatter sources for that reason.

What it means for fishing now

  • Book rivers in this order as they clear: St. Mary River first, then Bull River, with Elk River needing the most time.
  • High-but-clear water = fish edges, seams and back channels, not mid-channel drifts.
  • Nobody is reporting hatch-specific feeding yet — presentation beats pattern this week (Hatch Watch — Early July 2026 has the fly detail).
