Vendored icon sources — provenance & licences

Standard glyphs vendored for the map icon build (tools/build_map_icons.py normalizes them onto the house 48×48 grid as currentColor fills).

Policy (2026-07-30): standard-first. A vendored glyph is the default for every icon name it can cover; hand-drawn art is the option of last resort, kept only where no standard set provides the concept (fish species, molluscs, river-reading marks like riffle/pool/confluence, whitewater grade shields, ford/put-in/take-out, wildfire/evacuation, cartographic marks like the north arrow and highway shield).

Obligations

NPS repo (BSD-3): retain the copyright notice and disclaimer in source distributions — satisfied by keeping nps/LICENSE.txt alongside the vendored files and this note. No attribution required on the rendered maps themselves. The underlying symbol designs are NPS works (US federal public domain).
Temaki / Maki (CC0): none.

Notes

Files are kept byte-identical to upstream; all restyling happens in the build script so provenance stays auditable.
Selection order per icon: NPS → Temaki → Maki → hand-drawn.
Temaki gap-fills: hunting_blind (hunting), pier_fixed (dock), info_board (interpretive board), gate (FSR gate), boulder2 (rock).
Maki gap-fills: roadblock (closure), mountain (peak), wetland (marsh).
Hand-drawn names overridden by standard glyphs: trailhead, parking, tent, rec-site, boat-launch, hatchery, bridge, gate, closure, dam, rock, waterfall, spring, peak, marsh.
